"Touching hands are not like pharmaceuticals or scalpels. They are like flashlights in a darkened room. The medicine they administer is self-awareness. And for many of our painful conditions, this is the aid that is most urgently needed." ~ Deane Juhan

I love my work because I get to witness what happens when people get closer to the truth of who they really are. This happens not only because of their willingness to receive the healing touch of my hands, but because they are ready for the self-awareness, ready to notice what comes to light.

Over the past several weeks, I have received health care from a number of people: a Physical Therapist, a Craniosacral practitioner, a Dental Hygienist, a Massage Therapist, an Acupuncturist and a Surgeon. Some of these people used tools that they held in their hands, while some used their hands as the tools. I have such gratitude for the work that each one of these people did. One of my favorite mentors, the late Louise Hay, used this affirmation: “Every hand that touches me is a healing hand.” While there have been times in my life when that did not seem to be the truth at all, I now repeat and intend it everytime I receive healthcare. By being intentional and selective about my health and who I chose to receive that care from, I bless my being and I allow myself to heal what needs to be healed. Sometimes what needs to be healed is an old wound, physical or emotional, that seemingly has nothing to do with the work being done in the present day. Yet, there in the amazingly dense layers of my being, my tissues keep my injuries safe until they are touched upon in some way and I notice them and release them so that I can become lighter.

The mysteries of our bodies and souls are so vast that I wonder if we will ever stop learning, healing, becoming. I received a wise and timely message while working with a client last week, and that was this, “The time has come when we beings can stop being afraid of what our bodies have to say.” I take that as a most hopeful piece of wisdom. Many of us have hidden our bodies and hidden from our bodies for too long. We have even hidden from them while we showing them off or giving them away or being abused or abusing them ourselves (we weren’t able to see it). It is time to make peace with ourselves. It is time to hear every whisper, see every scar and release every tightly held memory. It doesn’t have to happen all at once, but gently and continuously until we are waking up each day happy to be alive and vibrant in our bodies.
